About Us:

Newcastle Shotokai is comprised of two karate clubs that reside at Heaton Community Centre and Marden Bridge School. Practitioners can expect an arena for self-development supported by values of trust, practical-application, self-expression and diversity. Key benefits of practising Shotokai karate have been reported to be:

  • improved fitness and health/well-being

  • a better appreciation of self-protection

  • increased confidence and an awareness of coping strategies

  • greater social participation via the provision of a friendly social outlet

Newcastle Shotokai has a mixed-ability membership and advocates an ‘open door’ policy to any child/adult newcomers, regardless of physical or mental ability.

Newcastle’s junior practice is aimed towards children/young people aged between 8 and 15 years. These sessions are based at Heaton Community Centre and are managed by experienced and enthusiastic instructors who have training in child protection and first aid. All senior and junior instructors have been police checked and have full Club Instructor insurance (each Shindo Shotokai member has Club Member insurance as well)

Newcastle Shotokai’s current leader, Nic Turner, is a 3rd degree black belt and a Physiotherapy graduate. He has always aimed to deliver a wide-range of creative and logical practice methods based upon his understanding of human movement established through his University studies. Furthermore, Nic’s practice with both national and international martial arts experts (from the UK, Canada and Japan) as well as his experience of other styles of karate, aikido, jujitsu, tai chi, pilates and yoga all add to a varied and unique approach to teaching Shotokai karate.

On behalf of everyone at Newcastle Shotokai, Nic wishes to pay tribute to Newcastle’s former leader, John Sowden, whom he regards as his teacher, mentor and friend. John’s hard work and dedication has helped shape the practice at Newcastle Shotokai and his efforts are sincerely appreciated.

“During a difficult period in my life, karate was a time when I could escape, become energised and feel connected with my mind, my body and to those around me.” - N.G.

“Witnessing many junior and senior practitioners achieve a good level of physical and mental competence has inspired me to continue to practice at Newcastle Shotokai. I hope to experience future success and good times with many more promising people.” - N.T.

“Having moved from an initial interest in improving my fitness to gaining a better appreciation of the martial arts, I have become someone I never imagined myself to be a devoted and enthusiastic exponent of karate...and I’m loving it!” - C.V.S.
